Ken Loach

IPA | AIP Lifetime Achievement Award in Film

The International Peace Alliance | Alliance Internationale de la Paix (IPA-AIP) proudly confers the Lifetime Achievement Award in Film upon Ken Loach, one of the most influential filmmakers of modern cinema, in recognition of his extraordinary career dedicated to storytelling that illuminates social realities and advances human dignity.
Over a career spanning more than six decades, Ken Loach has distinguished himself as a filmmaker whose work consistently addresses themes of social justice, labour rights, human dignity, and the lived experiences of working people. His films have brought global attention to issues such as poverty, homelessness, and inequality, reflecting cinema’s power to amplify voices often overlooked by mainstream narratives.
Loach’s landmark television drama Cathy Come Home (1966) became a defining moment in British broadcasting history, raising national awareness of homelessness and influencing public policy and debate. His 1969 feature Kes remains widely regarded as one of the greatest British films ever made and was ranked among the most important films of the twentieth century by the British Film Institute.
Throughout his distinguished career, Ken Loach has received some of the world’s most prestigious cinematic honours. He is among the rare filmmakers to have won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival twice, for The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) and I, Daniel Blake (2016), and holds a record number of selections in the Cannes main competition.
His exceptional contributions to cinema have been further recognized through lifetime achievement honours including the Honorary Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Additional honours include BAFTA recognition for Outstanding British Film, César Awards for Best Foreign Film, European Film Awards for Best Film, and multiple international critics’ prizes.
Beyond awards, Ken Loach’s body of work stands as a testament to cinema’s role as a force for reflection, empathy, and social awareness.
The award will be presented to Ken Loach at the Peace Ambassadors Awards Gala & Grand Ball, the culminating event of the International Peace Festival, to be held at the historic Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Canada, on October 24, 2026.
