MANDELA - Pilot of the Winds

An Artistic Plea For Peace

The flying objects are dancer performers who, in a dance of rising winds, reflect the vulnerability of souls destroyed by war. The movements perfectly complement the musical piece "Sarajevo" by Max Richter. Through the music and thoughts of war, the flying objects become souls. The music is profoundly sad and quiet, the thunder distant but unsettlingly present. The special aesthetics of the constantly rising and then gently falling flying objects require depth to truly touch the audience. Due to the current political situation, the theme of war is once again omnipresent. Regardless of which side one stands on in a war, the outcome is always the same: people are wounded, people are killed. But what happens to the people who survive? Can they return to a "normal life"? Are they traumatized, physically ill, internally dead? Do these people still have a soul, or are they merely existing? How are the souls of those not directly affected also wounded? How deeply does it hurt all of us, this unspeakable horror of war? It is said that when the soul takes flight, the person dances.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of celebration and inspiration at the 2024 Peace Ambassadors Gala hosted by the International Peace Alliance.

The Peace Ambassadors Gala is a formal black-tie event and the highlight of the International Peace Festival held in Toronto, Canada, every September, in support of McMaster Children's Hospital, home to the fastest growing kids-only emergency department in Ontario, Canada’s largest neonatal intensive care unit, and Ontario’s largest inpatient child and youth mental health unit, providing services to 2.5 million children from south central Ontario and the surrounding regions.

This extraordinary annual event is dedicated to honoring the work of McMaster Children's Hospital and our Global Peace Ambassadors, shining a light on the impactful work we are doing around the world as part of the burgeoning peace-building international community committed to the role and value of art and culture in peace and reconciliation processes.
