Melanie Walker to Receive the 2026 IPA | AIP Civic Leadership Award

The International Peace Alliance | Alliance Internationale de la Paix (IPA | AIP) is honoured to announce that distinguished civic leader and public affairs executive Melanie Walker will receive the 2026 IPA | AIP Civic Leadership Award in recognition of her exceptional contributions to civic dialogue, democratic engagement, informed public discourse, and the strengthening of institutions that support constructive civic participation and peaceful democratic societies.
"Strong civic institutions are essential to peaceful and democratic societies. Melanie Walker's leadership in fostering informed public dialogue and constructive civic engagement reflects the kind of principled leadership needed to strengthen democratic culture at a time of growing complexity and division."
— The Honourable Dr. Alvin Curling
President & Chair, International Peace Alliance | Alliance Internationale de la Paix (IPA | AIP)
The award will be presented during the Peace Ambassadors Awards Gala & Grand Ball, the closing celebration of the 2026 International Peace Festival, on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Toronto, Canada.
As Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian International Council (CIC), Melanie Walker has played an important leadership role in fostering informed public discussion on international affairs, public policy, diplomacy, economic and geopolitical change, and Canada's evolving role in a rapidly changing global environment. Through her leadership, the CIC has continued its longstanding mission of convening policymakers, diplomats, academics, business leaders, and engaged citizens in thoughtful dialogue on the most pressing issues of national and international concern.
At a time when democratic societies face increasing polarization, public distrust, geopolitical instability, and pressure on civic institutions, the role of independent civic leadership has become increasingly vital. Melanie Walker's work reflects a commitment to preserving the civic spaces where ideas can be debated constructively, diverse perspectives can be heard, and democratic engagement can be strengthened through informed participation.
Throughout her professional career, Melanie Walker has worked at the intersection of public affairs, strategic communications, stakeholder engagement, and policy dialogue, contributing to public discourse and institutional collaboration in Canada. Through her leadership and organizational stewardship, she has supported platforms that encourage thoughtful engagement among public institutions, private sector leaders, and civil society.
What distinguishes Melanie Walker's contribution is her recognition that peaceful and resilient societies depend not only on formal political institutions, but also on a strong civic culture, responsible dialogue, and the sustained engagement of informed citizens. In an era of accelerated disruption and democratic strain, such leadership plays an essential role in protecting the civic foundations upon which peace and social cohesion depend.
The 2026 IPA | AIP Civic Leadership Award recognizes individuals whose leadership strengthens civic institutions, promotes democratic engagement, and contributes to constructive public discourse in service of peaceful, resilient, and inclusive societies. Melanie Walker's leadership reflects the belief that peace is sustained not only through diplomacy abroad, but through strong civic culture and responsible democratic participation at home.
The award will be formally conferred upon Melanie Walker during the Peace Ambassadors Awards Gala & Grand Ball as part of the International Peace Alliance's global celebration of leadership, peacebuilding, and international cooperation.
