Ken Loach to Receive the 2026 IPA | AIP Lifetime Achievement Award in Film

The International Peace Alliance | Alliance Internationale de la Paix (IPA | AIP) is honoured to announce that internationally acclaimed filmmaker Ken Loach will receive the 2026 IPA | AIP Lifetime Achievement Award in Film in recognition of his extraordinary career spanning more than six decades and his enduring commitment to using cinema to illuminate social realities, advance human dignity, and bring greater attention to the experiences of working people and marginalized communities.

"Ken Loach has demonstrated throughout his remarkable career the profound power of cinema to illuminate the human condition and give voice to those whose experiences are too often overlooked. Through films of extraordinary honesty and humanity, he has challenged audiences to confront inequality and injustice while never losing sight of the dignity of the individual. His work reminds us that cinema can do more than tell stories — it can deepen understanding, awaken empathy, and contribute to the dialogue essential to building a more just and peaceful society."

— The Honourable Dr. Alvin Curling

President & Chair International Peace Alliance | Alliance Internationale de la Paix (IPA | AIP)

The award will be presented during the Peace Ambassadors Awards Gala & Grand Ball, the closing celebration of the 2026 International Peace Festival, on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Canada.

For more than six decades, Ken Loach has distinguished himself as a filmmaker whose work consistently addresses themes of social justice, labour rights, human dignity, and the lived experiences of working people. His films have brought international attention to issues including poverty, homelessness, inequality, and social exclusion, reflecting cinema's power to amplify voices and experiences often overlooked by mainstream narratives.

Loach's landmark television drama Cathy Come Home (1966) became a defining moment in British broadcasting history, raising national awareness of homelessness and contributing to public discussion and debate surrounding the issue. His 1969 feature Kes remains widely regarded as one of the most significant British films and has been recognized by the British Film Institute among the important works of British cinema.

Throughout his distinguished career, Ken Loach has received some of the world's most prestigious cinematic honours. He is among the rare filmmakers to have won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival twice, for The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) and I, Daniel Blake (2016), and an exceptional number of his films have been selected for the Cannes main competition.

His contributions to cinema have been further recognized through major lifetime achievement honours, including the Honorary Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Additional honours throughout his career include BAFTA recognition, César Awards for Best Foreign Film, European Film Awards, and numerous international critics' prizes. Together, these distinctions reflect the international reach, artistic significance, and enduring influence of his work.

Beyond awards and critical recognition, Ken Loach's body of work stands as a testament to cinema's capacity to encourage reflection, empathy, and social awareness. Through stories grounded in the experiences of individuals and communities confronting economic and social challenges, his films have consistently invited audiences to consider fundamental questions of dignity, justice, inequality, and collective responsibility.

The 2026 IPA | AIP Lifetime Achievement Award in Film recognizes Ken Loach's extraordinary contribution to cinema and his lifelong dedication to storytelling that brings attention to social realities and affirms the dignity of individuals and communities. His career demonstrates the important role film can play in encouraging dialogue, fostering empathy, and deepening public understanding of the social conditions that shape people's lives.

The award will be formally conferred upon Ken Loach during the Peace Ambassadors Awards Gala & Grand Ball as part of the International Peace Alliance's global celebration of leadership, peacebuilding, culture, and international cooperation.
