Gerhard Richter to Receive the 2026 IPA | AIP Lifetime Achievement
Award in Visual Arts

The International Peace Alliance | Alliance Internationale de la Paix (IPA | AIP) is honoured to announce that internationally acclaimed artist Gerhard Richter will receive the 2026 IPA | AIP Lifetime Achievement Award in Visual Arts in recognition of his extraordinary artistic career spanning more than six decades, his profound influence on contemporary painting, and his enduring contribution to global visual culture.
“Gerhard Richter’s extraordinary career reminds us that art does more than record the world around us; it gives us a way to confront history, question what we believe we see, and deepen our understanding of the human experience. Through more than six decades of artistic innovation, his work has crossed borders, generations, and cultures, demonstrating the enduring power of art to inspire reflection and dialogue. We are honoured to recognize his remarkable contribution to contemporary art and global visual culture.”
— The Honourable Dr. Alvin Curling
President & Chair
International Peace Alliance | Alliance Internationale de la Paix (IPA | AIP)
The award will be presented during the Peace Ambassadors Awards Gala & Grand Ball, the closing celebration of the 2026 International Peace Festival, on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Canada.
Over a career spanning more than six decades, Richter has redefined the possibilities of painting, moving between photorealism, abstraction, conceptual approaches, and experimental techniques. His work challenges boundaries between representation and abstraction and explores memory, perception, history, and the nature of images themselves.
Born in Dresden, Germany, in 1932, Richter experienced the upheavals of twentieth-century Europe. After studying at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, he moved to West Germany in 1961 and continued his studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he became part of a generation that reshaped postwar European art.
Richter’s work has been exhibited in leading museums and galleries worldwide and is represented in major collections, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate in London, the National Gallery in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
From blurred photo-paintings to monumental abstract canvases and glass installations, Richter’s innovations have influenced generations of artists. His work invites reflection on history, truth, memory, and the power of images in shaping individual and collective understanding.
His international distinctions include the Golden Lion at the 1997 Venice Biennale, the 1997 Praemium Imperiale for Painting, and the Wolf Prize in Arts for 1994/95. His work has also been the subject of major retrospectives at Tate Modern, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Centre Pompidou.
The 2026 IPA | AIP Lifetime Achievement Award in Visual Arts recognizes Richter’s artistic mastery and enduring contribution to contemporary art and visual culture. His career exemplifies the role of art in fostering reflection, dialogue, and cultural understanding across borders.
