Michael Clemons

Sports For Peace

Michael “Pinball” Clemons is a globally respected sports leader, philanthropist, and motivational figure whose life’s work demonstrates the power of sport to inspire hope, dignity, and positive social change. Widely admired for his leadership on and off the field, Mr. Clemons brings a lifetime of experience in professional sport, community engagement, and youth empowerment to his role as Director, Sports For Peace at the International Peace Alliance (IPA | AIP).

A former all-star running back, Grey Cup–winning coach, and current General Manager of the Toronto Argonauts, Mr. Clemons is celebrated not only for his achievements in Canadian football, but also for his unwavering commitment to community service and social impact. Known for his electric personality and infectious optimism, he has redefined the role of athletes as agents of peace and positive change.

Through The Pinball Clemons Foundation, he has dedicated himself to empowering disadvantaged youth by expanding access to education, mentorship, and pathways to success, while fostering a culture of resilience, responsibility, and hope. He also founded the Toronto Inner-City Rugby Foundation, further advancing the use of sport as a tool for inclusion, leadership development, and social cohesion.

A Florida native and graduate of the College of William & Mary with a degree in economics, Mr. Clemons joined the Canadian Football League in 1989 and quickly became one of the most electrifying players in professional football. He retired with a record 25,438 combined career yards and later made history as the first and only Black head coach in CFL history to win the Grey Cup.

Mr. Clemons was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and has received numerous honours recognizing both his athletic excellence and civic leadership, including induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, the Order of Ontario, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Meritorious Service Cross, and multiple honorary doctorates.

In 2025, Mr. Clemons was honoured with the IPA | AIP Celebrity Peace Ambassador Award, recognizing his lifelong dedication to peacebuilding, community empowerment, and the intentional use of sport to promote respect, cooperation, and social justice.

As Director, Sports For Peace, Mr. Clemons leads IPA’s global efforts to harness sport as a catalyst for peace, youth engagement, and community resilience. His vision emphasizes inclusion, mentorship, leadership development, and the creation of safe, values-driven spaces where young people and communities can thrive.

Mr. Clemons’ leadership embodies the belief that sport is more than competition—it is a powerful platform for unity, dialogue, and transformation. Through Sports For Peace, he continues to inspire individuals and communities around the world to strive for excellence, compassion, and a shared commitment to peace.
